Gun drill is a precision deep hole drilling tool, it can be used to process the deep hole in several materials. When using the gun drills, the coolant oil get to the drill bit and remove the chips from the v-shape groove of drill shank. Also the guide bush on the drill bit, which will guide the hole and get a good hole size and precision. For such kind of internal coolant, external chip removing tool has its unique character with other tooling.
Shape of drill bit
For gun drill, it’s use to process the gun barrel at first, but the no matter from linearity and processing precision, it’s poor. With the development of the deep hole drilling technology, it is now no longer used in gun barrel industry, but also in automobile industry, mining industry, medical equipment and hydraulic industry. It can process the small hole diameter with big draw ratio.
Characteristic of gun drill
Usually there are three kinds of gun drilling tools: integral carbide gun drill, weld type gun drill and indexable gun drill. At the end of the non-cutting end, there is a drill shank to connect with the machine.

For the gun drill, the coolant oil reach to the cutting area through a hole, but sometimes in order to get a big flow, we’ll apply for more coolant holes or U shape hole. The chip removing groove is V shape, which will make the removing more clean and also with high efficiency.
When the required hole diameter is smaller than 50mm to 75mm, the draw ratio of drilling length and drilling hole diameter is bigger than 20 times,it’s good to use the gun drill. Even when the draw ratio of drilling length and drilling hole diameter is bigger than 400 times, gun drill can still ensure a good processing precision. Usually there are 3 kinds of processing method: 1, gun drill rotary, workpiece fixed. 2, workpiece rotary, gun drill fixed. 3, workpiece and gun drill counter rotary, for this kind of way, you can get a good roughness and processing precision.
