We are luckily to receive a project from Metal Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences of high wear resistant aluminum alloy material deep hole processing project. The outside diameter of the parts is Φ42×2800,the material including 12% SiC ,and it processes the Φ22.5±0.05 through hole,the inside hole tolerance is 0.1mm, roughness lower than Ra0.8, the hole skewness should inside 1.5mm.

The drilling bit of the gun drilling tools is TiN coating, as below:
For the cutting oil, we apply for the good lubricating Blaser Swisslube comapny Vascomill 22 special use for deep hole drilling.
The experiment are as follows:
Fro the first time processing, in order to avoid the excessive wear, we process every 500mm then grinding the gun drill. When to the drilling depth 1600mm, the center hole will deviate more than 10mm, the gun drill will drill through the hole wall, and the parts will be a waste.
Fro the second time processing, we process every 1000mm then grinding the gun drill. When to the drilling depth 2100mm, the center hole will deviate more than 10mm, the gun drill will drill through the hole wall, and the parts will be a waste.
We discuss with the people in Metal Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and get the following result: the main reason is the to high ratio of SiC, the normal carbide gun drill is no longer than satisfy the processing requirement, the fast wearing of the gun drill will cause the quick deviation of skewness.
After the several times discussion, we apply for PCD diamond cutter, which is welded on the gun drill. For such kind of technical, there is no such example inside China. We successfully manufacture the first Φ22.5×3600mm PCD gun drill.
For the third time processing, we apply for the PCD gun drill, the processing result is very good. We process two pcs workpieces, the skewness, roughness and dimensional accuracy, all these meet the processing demand. And the hole diameter all control within Φ22.50-Φ22.53, roughness reach to Ra0.3, the skewness, one is 0.3mm/2800mm, the other one is 0.8mm/2800mm.
For this project, we get a high praise from the Metal Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and solve the big difficulty in their project.
For the experiment of this special anti-wear material, we have got a lot of experiment, and in the procedure of manufacturing gun drill, we introduce the PCD, it will largely widen the using range of gun drill and has a big influence towards the deep hole processing industry.
